Employment Law Advice
Despite claims that our society is political correctness gone made there are still too many cases being reported of sexual harassment in the work place. We don’t have a postman any more we have a post person and we don’t have a policewoman we have a police officer. This may seem like it is a bit over the top but when you’re the one on the receiving end of unwanted attention these rules could mean the difference of you being called a hypochondriac and you being able to go to work happy each day.
If you feel like you’re being harassed at work there are a few steps you need to take before you consider legal action or looking for a new job. If things are bad you might decide you want to talk to a business law specialist just so you know what your rights are and where you stand. The most common advice they give is to keep a written record of anything you feel isn’t appropriate behaviour at work. Make a note of the time and date and exactly what was said or done. You don’t necessarily have to call an official meeting with your manager, you might just want to have a quick chat with the person upsetting you and it might be a case they’ll back off. This might not help though in which case you might not have any choice than to talk to a employment law professional.
If you do decide the only course of action left to you is to take legal action you’re going to have to consider the full consequences of this. There’s also the possibility that your place of work won’t support you which might make your case even harder. If your action is against the actual company you’re going to need someone who knows about company law. Any legal action can be very expensive so if you have the support of a union you should probably use it.
