How Work At Home Influenced My Thinking On Driving And Car Ownership.
When I began to work from home a few months ago I not surprisingly found a noticeable decrease in the amount of motoring I was doing. In fact, as most of my work is Online jobs, I seldom need to leave the house and I have found that often several days go by when the car stays unused. Next week the car lease ends and I am giving serious consideration to my transport requirements for the coming weeks whilst I still work from home.
The majority of vehicle lease plans permit a fixed yearly mileage, often it is 10,000. If you do not drive 10,000 miles annually then you still have to pay the normal monthly lease cost and there is often no concession. If you Work from home full time like I do then you may find that your yearly mileage is much less than 10,000 so a lease plan of this type will be uneconomical.
For this reason I am almost certainly not going to renew a lease on a car. My alternatives are to buy one for cash. However this doesn’t attract because it will lock up a considerable sum of money. In addition, my partner owns a car which is perfect for social and domestic use , so I am thinking about not having a car at all and hiring one if and when required.
Looking at my work from home diary I guess that in the last six months I would have required car rental on nine individual days. Researching daily car rental costs I reckon I can rent a suitable car for in the region of £30 per day, so my total six months transport expense will be below £300 in total. Plus I could be extravagant and hire something bigger and better if I wanted.
So that’s now how I intend to organise my motoring for as long as I continue to work from home.
